Katrina Nassichuk is the Director of the Contemporary Department.
This class is for students who have completed one full year of Contemporary 1/2 or who are new to contemporary dance. Students must be in Level 5, Level 4 or Teen Ballet and be 12 years old and up. Students will be introduced to the expressive style of contemporary and modern dance and build on their ballet technique by learning improvisation, contact and release work, and new ways of moving their bodies. This class is highly recommended for ballet students.
Students in Level 5 or 7 Ballet who also have at least 2 years of jazz and/or contemporary training may take this class. This 90 minute, once a week class is a technique class only, to challenge students and push them to greater levels of excellence in their skill and performance capabilities.
In order to take this 2-hour rehearsal class, students MUST also be in Senior Jazz/Contemporary. This block will not be a class as such, but will be for preparing choreography for performance. This group will perform at festivals and other venues throughout the year. Students in this group may also be eligible for solos and small group pieces at the teacher and director's discretion and invitation.
This once-a-month workshop will be a chance for intermediate and advanced dancers to explore new movement and develop their own choreography. It will be facilitated by an experienced contemporary teacher and will have students working on their improvisation skills, trying new ways to move their bodies both individually and in partners and helping them learn how to explore and put together movements into choreography. This is a highly recommended class for all senior ballet and contemporary students. In order to register for this, students must be in Level 5 or 7 Ballet and must be taking their corresponding contemporary class.
Students in Level 5 and 7 Ballet are highly encouraged to take the appropriate contemporary class, as an understanding of contemporary movement is extremely beneficial to their development in ballet.
